Can You Be Hypnotised? Debunking the 7 Biggest Myths About Hypnosis
Share:

Hypnosis is one of the most misrepresented subjects in popular culture. Stage shows, movies, and decades of misinformation have created a fog of myth that prevents many people from accessing a genuinely transformative therapy. Let's clear it up.

Myth 1: "You Lose Control Under Hypnosis"

Fact: You remain fully conscious and in complete control at all times. You cannot be made to do anything against your values or will. The hypnotic state is simply a state of focused, relaxed attention — not unconsciousness. If the therapist asked you to do something you found objectionable, you would simply refuse or come out of hypnosis.

Myth 2: "Only Weak-Minded People Can Be Hypnotised"

Fact: The opposite is closer to the truth. Research consistently shows that imaginative, intelligent, and creatively engaged individuals tend to be the most hypnotically responsive. The ability to enter trance is a measure of imaginative focus — a strength, not a weakness.

Myth 3: "You Might Not Wake Up"

Fact: There is no such thing as being "stuck" in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state the brain moves through every day (when daydreaming, absorbing in a book, or drifting to sleep). You will always naturally return to full waking consciousness. Even if a practitioner left the room mid-session, you would simply relax into sleep and wake naturally.

Myth 4: "Hypnosis Is Like Sleep"

Fact: Despite appearances, hypnosis is a state of heightened focus, not reduced awareness. EEG studies show that the hypnotised brain is more active in certain regions than in ordinary waking consciousness. Clients are fully aware of everything happening during a session.

Myth 5: "Hypnotherapists Can Make You Reveal Secrets"

Fact: You retain complete control of what you share during hypnosis. Hypnosis is not truth serum. You can withhold, deflect, or refuse to answer any question. Many clients choose not to disclose certain things even in a deep trance — and this is perfectly fine; effective therapy does not require full disclosure.

Myth 6: "You Will Remember Everything You Were Told to Forget"

Fact: Clinical hypnotherapy does not create amnesia or erase memories. What it does is change the emotional charge attached to a memory — so that something previously distressing becomes neutral. The memory remains, but no longer triggers the same automatic response.

Myth 7: "It Doesn't Work for Me — I Can't Be Hypnotised"

Fact: The vast majority of people — research suggests 85–90% — can achieve a therapeutic level of trance sufficient for effective clinical work. Some people require a different style of induction or more sessions to relax deeply enough. With a skilled practitioner, hypnotic depth is rarely a barrier to successful therapy.
