Hypnotic Depth Test

Discover your natural trance depth profile — used by clinical hypnotherapists to personalise treatment plans. Based on the Davis-Husband Hypnotic Depth Scale.

1. Have you ever found yourself completely lost in a daydream — unaware of your surroundings for several minutes?
2. When you read fiction or watch films, how deeply do you become emotionally involved?
3. How easily can you visualise in your mind's eye? (e.g. picturing a red apple)
4. In the moments just before sleep, do you ever experience hypnagogic imagery (random images, sounds, or sensations)?
5. Have you ever driven a familiar route and arrived at your destination with no memory of the journey?
6. How do you respond to guided relaxation recordings or meditations?

The Four Levels of Hypnotic Depth

Light Trance (Hypnoidal)

Physical relaxation, eye heaviness, reduced desire to move. This is a comfortable, pleasant state where relaxation-based suggestions — for stress, sleep onset, and mild anxiety — work well. Roughly 30% of the population naturally enters light trance.

Medium Trance (Cataleptic)

Partial amnesia, time distortion, heightened suggestibility. At this depth, therapeutic suggestions for habit change, confidence, and phobias are highly effective. Around 45% of people reach medium trance easily.

Deep Trance (Somnambulistic Entry)

Full analgesia, positive and negative hallucinations, and deep subconscious access. This is where regression work, trauma processing, and deep belief-change occur. Approximately 20% of the population reaches this depth naturally.

Somnambulistic (Esdaile State)

The deepest functional hypnotic state — used historically for surgical anaesthesia. Characterised by profound dissociation and total subconscious access. Around 5% of people enter this state spontaneously; it can be trained.
